Clearly the reviewers first BT/MW game.
Friend: BattleTech is just Robotech with crap robots.Me: Beats him to a mushDad: What the hell! Why did you beat him up?Me: He discriminated BattleTech Me & Dad: Beats him to a puddle
Isn't this the guy who ripped off someones review on reddit?
you can always count on IGN to have a shallow, idiotic, corporate take. I wonder if whoever wrote the pablum for this carefully recruited nasally nerd to rattle off even plays games for fun.
IGN, your reviewers are all noobs. Please go home.
It's because of people like you that modern strategy games are getting dumbed down. I hope you're happy with yourself.
I'll wait for the Caucasian DLC.
the worst mechrarrior ever seen XD
Ok this game looks boring. I expected some sort of visual candy but this is just dry land and robots doing missions. How long cN you play it before it becomes too boring to look at that environment that not even got surprises in it. Thanks! I won’t buy this now. Come on come on Red Dead Redemption 2!!! Two more months
Batteltech was a complete disappointment and waste of money.
ahhh front mission how i missed you :3
Hey Mr Reviewer. I'm guessing you're more of a chess guy than a poker guy. A little unpredictability can be fun. Just chill and roll with it. :-)
Great, so its XCom with robots. If I wanted to play a game with no brains and pure luck on it that makes me want to kill myself I would just play Russian Roulette.
Clearly, you've never played the original mini game. This plays just like it. Freebirth Toad.
As a player of the ACTUAL table top/ board game I have experienced all of these frustrations but THAT IS THE GAME! Play the REAL game and then review...
Yeah, spot on review. Hell I could even live with the RNG if the game had great UX design. Everything feels so badly designed and unpolished.. like the constant lagging ingame and when switching menus, the awful camera, the sluggish mech control, the poor graphics (while still having a bad performance overall) or how the onship menues are so badly designed. It just looks and feels very amateurish and untested. Which is a shame, because the story and the universe is very interesting, speaking as someone who has no idea of the TT game. This game desperately needs two more years of development, performance fixes and UX / "Quality of Life" improvements.
The only actual point you have is the Cinematic camera can be slow.. other than that use a solid state drive and learn to play with rng
Your describing JUST HOW The ACTUAL TABLE TOP GAME WAS.. often it was about pure luck and a set of bad rolls that could turn a game completely around
Wow, I had no idea this existed. Instant buy!!!!
A guy with no idea how to play a strategy game complain about the game being too hard lel.
It's also not that good to use lights over the course of the game. And having 12+ take turns beating up your 4 mechs is exhausting.
Just played it......very addicting!
if it didnt have the rng, it wouldnt be btech. its actually quite streamlined over the tabletop game. complaining about rng in btech is like complaining in fire emblem when your units die permanently. if it was different, it wouldnt be btech.
seriously , tactic games should learn how hit rate done in mario + rabbids.also sick with these elitists that say "the tabletop uses dice anyway". of course we all know tabletop ver. uses dice. the video specifically review the PC ver. for PC player. and I think it's fair to mention the RNG part. not everyone is RNG elitist like you all anyway
bad review is bad..... this is table top game... dice game = rng-sus base game..... 3 years old Kid now on review every time.
Whine more please.
Game based on dice rolls has too much RNG. 7/10
This is like watching a man without arms review a walking cane.
THIS GAME IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!
TL;DRReviewer complains that the RNG of the game is bad, because he is bad at the game. If you think about movement, cover, environmental factors and using the pilot's abilities to their maximum; as well as tweaking the mechs so that each pilot has one or two mechs that are "made for them" you will mitigate the number of "lucky shots" that take out your mech and maximize your odds of victory with minimal damage.
It sounds to me like you never played tabletop battletech. It's all random numbers/dice roles. This stays true to the game.
0/10 too much strategy
if you don't like this, don't play xcom
clearly never played the table top game
LOL whine whine, everything didn't go my way, whine whine.
Worst review ever! What? Did battletech's company not send over lunch and so you decided to take it out on their game buy complaining about randomness in a turn based strategy? what the hell is wrong with u? I remember y i stopped watching your weak, no brain used reviews.
ugh i hate tactic battle systems that rely so heavily on RNG accuracy bullshit. i got enough of that from modern shadowrun games and wasteland 2 meh
Complaining that Battletech plays like Battletech made me laugh a bit, I'm personally thankful it follows the Battletech rule set otherwise it would be just another generic game. The tabletop game was iconic and thanks to this game many can take a trip down memory lane.
now if they only added rpg elements here as a human like in the very very old dos based game battletech the crescent hawk's inception aside from the turn based mech battles this would have been a solid game. or even the crescent hawk's revenge. those were very very memorable games for me.
I think you've underrated this game somewhat. I've been enjoying it immensely, including the side-missions and the huge Periphery area of the galaxy that this game allows you to explore plus the detailed crew, ship and Mech management. I haven't finished the campaign yet but so far I'd rate this game an 8 or 9 with plenty of memorable missions and moments so far. For a kick-starter project, it's outstanding.
Square Enix should be able to learn some things from this game for their Front Mission franchise.
missed the fact that the release is buggy as hell has nothing but issues losing savesand not loading properly at all
>Not mentioning Mech Commander for a tactical BATTLETECH game.I just started this after getting my Steam Key from supporting the Kickstarter so long ago.So far it's great, we'll see how it goes. Also, I wish I knew the playtime the campaign takes in this game. To google!
IGN - not sure if you read these comments, but this review comes off as very superficial and is not surprisingly causing a lot of frustration in the comments. This mainly comes from the criticisms being brought up about the game.1. RNG - This game is a close (not direct) adaptation of the original BattleTech table top game, which literally has you rolling dice to determine hits and damage locations. A key part of the strategy of BT is trying to maximize your odds by being in the right place at the right time, and there are also specific pilot skills and stats later in the game that help you focus on hitting what you need to hit. The fact that you complained about this at all indicates that you either did not play the game enough to experience those changes in behavior, or you did no research into the background of BattleTech.2. Camera issues - I'll agree with you that the "dynamic camera" features are mostly really wonky, but all of those can be very easily disabled in the game options. I would hardly consider this a topic worth mentioning unless you insisted on leaving them on. There are other issues with the game that are much more noteworthy (performance issues, bugs with the procedural side missions, etc)3. Side missions are boring - this is a subjective statement and so I'll just share my opinion that because this was based on a board game, where players had to create missions and battle scenarios themselves, the procedural side missions do a great job of randomly putting together missions with some amount of variety. Of course they won't be as memorable or engaging as a hand-crafted campaign mission, that's kind of how procedural generation works. These should really be thought of as "practice" or "leveling" scenarios rather than grading them alongside scripted campaign missions.I won't say it deserves a better or worse score, because at the end of the day that score is your opinion of the game, but if you're going to stand by that score and say "the game has issues" you need to present a better argument than what is shown here.
Meh, I'll stick to more fun and strategy oriented games like CoD.
The goal of the game was to recreate the feel of the tabletop game on PC. In that they have succeeded wildly. In the tabletop game, you roll dice for hit location. That's the low-tech version of RNG. So it had to have RNG for hit location to replicate that to PC. And complaining about your favorite mechwarrior getting killed by a random headshot is a similar situation. Going into any battle should be risky. The legit criticism of the game should be mostly technical. It's glitchy AF. Despite not being very graphically demanding, it manages to overheat my liquid cooled GPU and cause a shutdown pretty regularly. No other game has ever done that no matter how impressive the graphics and physics were. I think I found a fix for that yesterday, but it's hard to imagine why that was a problem to begin with. Load times are terrible, even with an SSD. There should be more voice acting and less reading the dialog. Dialog choices don't seem to really matter, but maybe my standards are too high after playing Mass Effect games. They perfectly captured the grit and grind of running a mercenary unit in 3025 tech era. PGI should take some notes on that.
dear IGN, stick to your CoD and leave this man's game to man.
What voice acting? It's 90% text.
