The Vampire is perhaps the most popular creature in all of media. So why do people like them so much? Let’s take a look at movies specifically to see how Vampires are used to give powerful and progressive messages.

Call Twilight creative while completely flubbing Buffy's reimagining of vampirism? Way to show your ignorance of the topic.

interview with the vampire the movie is criminally underrated.

edit: Nah you're right. It's pretty gay to (as a guy) gaze at another guy and bite their neck and touch them and stuff. I guess my point is just that it's bisexual at the most and more accurately, I think they transcend gender in a way (in Anne Rice's novels). And also it's true that this is a good way of introducing people to homosexuality, which was your point anyway. lol

Louis and Lestat aren't gay! I've got nothing again homosexuality but their relationship isn't anything like romantic love in my opinion. I've read 3 or 4 of the sequels and there was never a sense of gayness. At most it was bisexual because the vampires in Anne Rice's novels don't really care about male and female, they just see beauty. I feel corny saying they transcended gender, but I guess that's what I am saying xD

Maybe my objection is that their love doesn't care about the gender, they just see an attractive person and love (and I get the feeling in the novels that they really see the world differently and become different creatures when they become vampires, so that's why it makes sense that the specifics of the gender become less relevant), but it's not about men liking men or girls liking girls specifically.

Disclaimer: this is just about Ann Rice's novels and the movie of the first novel, I don't know about the connection to homosexuality in the other things you talked about.

I wish Vampire’s Kiss was mentioned in this video. It’s like American Psycho, except it’s Nicholas Cage and he has vampire-dysphoria.

What is this music? Does anyone know? It sounds so cool

Always here for the vampire discourse. Great job! If any of y'all are hungry for more and like video essays there is a series on this site called Vampire Reviews. The host breaks down specific works that have depicted vampires and she does it in a really entertaining way. She's already done videos on Interview With The Vampire, Hellsing, and What We Do In The Shadows to name a few. They run between 20-40 minutes depending on the subject (her longest video is about all the depictions of Lucy in Dracula) but if you have some time to kill go check it out.

It is NOT a "myth". Skeptism is pathetic.

I love what we do in the shadows! So funny!

Was kinda expecting you to mention Carmilla, a novel that came out 23 years before Stoker's Dracula, it had a lot of lesbian undertones.

Would love to know what soundtrack this is? The music is beautiful!!

But who is flickering the lights?

What music is in the background of this video? It's lovely

Vampires to me represent something completely different then how you put it. I think of it as like a being that preys on humans, something that we are weak to. Us humans are the dominant species on this planet, so I think that we made up all these creatures Vampires, Zombies, Mummies, Witches, Ghosts, Demons etc. to create something that we can be afraid of. We used to be afraid of Lions, Tigers and Bears but since not many of us worry about those things we had to fill the void.

Coming from "The Art of Overanalyzing Movies" makes this harder to watch ;-)

This made every single vampire movie I’ve ever watched way more interesting and kind of genius...

i found myself beginning to Waltz across the floor while listening to the background music.

Edit: Almost forgot a shout-out to my homie Count Chocula. Yeeeeeeeh!

Lol but Edward is NOT a bad boy it never seemed like one to me, he eats animals and all that good boy stuff, my dude needed to get married before losing his virginity. Bella does save him but it's a little more complicated than that idk. Lestat tho, is the epitome of the bad boy

I know it's not a movie but I kinda wish you would've included 'Carmilla' too, since a lot of movies are based on it including 'Vampyr' (even though they removed all bits of lesbianism). It's really one of the OG vampire stories and really gay too, so would prove your point

TBH I keep forgetting The Count is a vampire.

reminder that the FIRST vampire novel WAS NOT dracula, it was carmilla, and she was a lesbian vampire and her book came out 20 years before dracula but her gets all the credit for creating the popular gothic vampire

I hate showing vampires as analogue of repressed minorities. "God hate fangs" from true blood for example. They literally are bloodsucking monsters... gays are not exactly known for their bloodthirsty urges. It is perfectly reasonable to hate vampires in this universe! Not hating them is naive and stupid.

Don't be so quick to adopt the vampire as your mascot. The 'virgins' are just code for children. Killing children & drinking their blood. 🤔 I hear about that a lot these days. It still goes on.

I really want Now You See It, Cinema Wins and Sideways to do a giant collab. I feel like their presentation styles match up nicely and I just want to watch Cinema Wins gushing over a movie and Now You See It and Sideways dissecting why and what makes the scene:)
